Stargazers across the UK were able to see a solar phenomenon today as the sun appeared to have a bite taken out of it.

The impressive sight was the result of a partial solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth.

Observers around the world went outside to watch the moment as it happened, with those in western Siberia predicted to have the best view.

People were advised not to look directly at the sun to avoid damaging their eyes.

Dr Robert Massey, of the Royal Astronomical Society, said the eclipse could cause the moon to block the view of “some or all of the bright solar surface”, and the sun will “appear to have a bite taken out of it”.
