Top 1000 stores – The eCommerce industry in Germany has seen turbulent times recently.

After two years of pandemic, which had changed consumer behavior rather for the benefit of online trade, the war on Ukraine, resulting in exploding energy prices, high inflation, supply chain problems, and not least the threat of war which many feel tangible, represent another fundamental break in people’s lives.

According to the German association for eCommerce and the mail-order business bevh, consumption has been fundamentally impacted: Revenues for the first half of 2022 were 1.3% below 2021 levels.

Still, the current 2022 figures are reportedly high above pre-Covid levels. In fact, the past two years have been extraordinarily flourishing for the German eCommerce market – this is what the recently released study “E-Commerce Markt Deutschland 2022” (eCommerce market Germany) by eCommerceDB and EHI Retail Institute affirms. The leading online stores in Germany were able to build on their corona success also in 2021:

The leading German online stores could massively increase their net sales in the past two years, according to the study “E-Commerce Markt Deutschland 2022”, released by eCommerceDB and EHI Retail Institute.

The top 1,000 online stores in Germany by total first-party net sales could steadily and continuously increase their cumulated net sales over the past 12 years, but saw an especially pronounced leap in the first corona year 2020: The total cumulated net sales of the top 1,000 increased by more than 33% between 2019 and 2020, resulting in a total of €68.8 billion.

2021 was able to continue on the tracks. With 16%, growth was below the 2020, but above the pre-Covid levels of 2019 and 2018. In 2021, the total cumulated net sales generated by the biggest 1,000 online stores in Germany amounted to €79.9 billion.
