“We decided we wanted our concerts to produce as little CO2 as possible.”
LUNA SEA member SUGIZO commented at the Japan Mobility Show, held in November 2023. In the search for a sustainable future for entertainment, he said the band has started using hydrogen fuel cells to power its concerts.
December of that same year, Yuta Tomikawa traveled to a LUNA SEA concert venue in Sendai City. There he found Mirais bearing stickers like “Sendai Toyopet” and “Miyagi Toyota.” The external power output convertor which connects the electricity generated by the Mirais to power the musical instruments bore the Honda logo.
In order to achieve the future of hydrogen and music that SUGIZO speaks of, like-minded partners are breaking many boundaries to come together and help out.
The question on everyone’s mind is, how does using a hydrogen fuel cell change the sound?
The sound designer who mixes sound for LUNA SEA, Hisaaki Komatsu, says that he felt a big change and sense of possibility when they began using hydrogen electricity.
“The speed and clarity of the sound is really amazing. …Once we resolve a few issues, we’ll be unstoppable,” says Komatsu.
SUGIZO continues to pursue the possibilities of hydrogen and music. When asked why, he had a simple answer: “Because I want a clean Earth.”
He continued, saying, “The LUNA SEA members are getting addicted to hydrogen.” In interviews with his bandmates, Tomikawa teased drummer Shinya, saying, “You’re Hydrogen Shinya.” To which he replied, “That’s right.”
Don’t miss this chance to hear from the people coming together to change music and the future of the planet.
